Competitive Exclusion of Microbial Species for a Single Nutrient with Internal Storage
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study a chemostat model that describes competition between n microbial species for a single-limited resource based on storage. The model incorporates internal resource storage variables that serve the direct connection between species growth and external resource availability. Mathematical analysis for the global dynamics of the model is carried out by using the fluctuating method. It is shown that competitive exclusion principle holds for the limiting system of the model. The species with the smallest ambient nutrient concentration wins the competition. We extend the result of competitive exclusion in the paper [SW1] from two species to n species.

متن کاملDynamics of Two Phytoplankton Species Competing for Light and Nutrient with Internal Storage
We analyze a competition model of two phytoplankton species for a single nutrient with internal storage and light in a well mixed aquatic environment. We apply the theory of monotone dynamical system to determine the outcomes of competition: extinction of two species, competitive exclusion, stable coexistence and bistability of two species. We also present the graphical presentation to classify...
متن کاملMathematical Analysis of Two Microbial Species Competing for Two Complementary Resources with Internal Storage and Different Removal Rates
In the present paper, we consider a mathematical model of two microbial species competing for two complementary nutrients with internal storage and different removal rates. The competitive exclusion, coexistence, and bi-stabilty are predicted in this model as those in the two-species Lotka-Volterra competition model.
متن کاملOn a Mathematical Model Arising from Competition of Phytoplankton Species for a Single Nutrient with Internal Storage: Steady State Analysis
In this paper we construct a mathematical model of two microbial populations competing for a single-limited nutrient with internal storage in an unstirred chemostat. First we establish the existence and uniqueness of steadystate solutions for the single population. The conditions for the coexistence of steady states are determined. Techniques include the maximum principle, theory of bifurcation...
متن کاملCompetition between microorganisms for a single limiting resource with cell quota structure and spatial variation.
Microbial populations compete for nutrient resources, and the simplest mathematical models of competition neglect differences in the nutrient content of individuals. The simplest models also assume a spatially uniform habitat. Here both of these assumptions are relaxed. Nutrient content of individuals is assumed proportional to cell size, which varies for populations that reproduce by division,...
